Amami-Oshima is an island with a subtropical climate located in between the mainland of Kagoshima and Okinawa. Many animals and creatures live in the forests that make up the majority of the island. In recognition of this, the island was registered as a Natural World Heritage Site in 2021. The people who live on this island have built their own culture, and have developed a heart that values connections between people.
*The Homestay Program take place at Tatsugo Town.
Sea of Amami
The sea around Amami is unique to an island with a subtropical climate where the Kuroshio Current flows in. The water is so clear that you can see colorful fish without having to dive deep underwater. There are also beautiful coral reefs, forming a rich ecosystem. Come encounter various kinds of marine life, including sea turtles, in the crystal clear waters known as “Amami Blue”!
Forest of Amami
Known for its rich natural environment, the area is home to a subtropical oceanic climate. The mangrove forests on Amami, are the second largest in Japan, and you can encounter a wide variety of flora and fauna there.
History and Culutre of Amami
The culture of the Amami is unique, having its foundation in Japanese culture, but also influenced by Ryukyu culture during the period of Ryukyu Kingdom, and by Kagoshima culture during the long period of era of Satsuma rule. A traditional dance called “Hachigatsu-Odori (August Dance)” is performed in each village, and there is an unique song called “Shimauta.”

Amami offers a variety of activities in the natural environment. Experience these activities that you would not normally be able to experience, as well as the panoramic views that are unique to this World Heritage Site!
■ Snorkeling with Sea Turtles
In the highly visibile under water, also known as Amami Blue, you can swim with sea turtles. In Amami, the sea turtles are close enough to swim from the shore, put on a wetsuit and life jacket and head to their home in the shallow waters!
※The chances of seeing sea turtles are very high, but because they are natural creatures, there is a possiblity that you may not encounter with them.

■ Mangrove – Canoe
Paddle a canoe through the rivers of Amami, home to the second largest mangrove forest in Japan, where you will encounter rare plants and animals.

Nature Experience
■ Amami Forest Expedition
The animal life found on the island is abundant and varied and rare. Many of the species are endemic, meaning they are not only native to a certain area, but can only be found there.

■ Homestay Program
Blend into and live a daily life of the Amami region, which has developed its own unique culture. The time you spend interacting with the local people will surely be a priceless experience.
[About Tatsugo Town Homestay Program]
This program was started in 2024 as part of an educational program, where participants can stay with local families and interact with, observe and experience the unique nature, culture, history, and traditions of the area. In order to improve the system for accepting participants, the public and private sectors have worked together to hold various training sessions for host families.

■ Amami Tradition
Experience the mud dyeing technique, which is one of the processes in creating the silk fabric known as “Amami Oshima Tsumugi”. Also experience the “Hachigatsu-Odori (August Dance)”, an intangible folk cultural asset designated by Kagoshima Prefecture, where men and women dance to the rhythm of drums, singing lyrics to each other in prayer for bountiful harvests and protection from evil spirits.
